In the past half century, the SFIFF has screened more than 5,000 shorts, documentaries and feature films. Our Films database contains a wealth of information on most of these films: credits, print sources, film stills, notes from the Festival program guide, and even some posters and trailers. The first silent film screened at the Festival (now an annual tradition) was The Scarlet Letter (1924) by the great Swedish director Victor Sjöström, on October 24, 1968. The film’s star, Lillian Gish, was honored with an in-person tribute two days later.
