Manoel de Oliveira received the Akira Kurosawa Award in 1994; he appeared in person.Originally a six-part miniseries for Portuguese television, Oliveira's screen adaptation of the enormously popular novel by Camilo Castelo Branco (written in 1861) recounts a Romeo and Juliet story complicated by the love of a servant girl for the hero. The tragic consequences of this period drama unfold within the filmmaker's unique vision; what Oliveira did to theater in Benilde he does to the long, plot-thick 19th-century novel in Doomed Love. This literal transcription is a tour de force that stretches the boundaries of cinematic conventions.
