Jules Dassin and Ellen Burstyn in person.A sensation in Europe this year, A Dream of Passion stars Melina Mercouri and Ellen Burstyn in a complex and powerful variation of the classic Medea theme. While preparing a stage production of Medea, a strong but troubled actress (Mercouri) arranges to meet an American woman (Burstyn) who has been imprisoned for the murder of her three children. A deep relationship develops between the two women, and an interdependence grows between the three Medeas—the legend, the actress and the murderess. Director/writer Jules Dassin (Never on Sunday, Phaedra) based in part on a true story, and he describes the theme of the film as “the total risk that a woman takes when she constructs her entire life around one man and the violence that can come from a total trust that is betrayed."
