Steeped in British naturalism and American film noir, Following is a wickedly clever story of how a young man’s innocent obsession with following people leads him into a dark underworld. Bill is an unlikely hero, a marginalized but intriguing Everyman. Unemployed, he claims to be a writer and lately he has taken to following strangers at random on the street—purportedly research for his writing, but it’s clear that his obsession derives from a desperate need to fill his lonely hours. One day, Cobb, a man Bill has been following, catches him in the act. Cobb reveals he has a transgressive daily routine of his own: he is a burglar—but one who relishes the act of invading people’s privacy much more than the economic fringe benefits. He invites Bill to join him. Soon Bill is spending his time breaking into flats with Cobb and having lunch on stolen credit cards. In Cobb, Bill finds a strange companionship—part mentor, part confessor and part evil twin. When Bill gets involved with a woman whose home the two have previously burgled—and whose personal possessions Bill still has—Bill becomes entwined in something much larger and more horrifying than petty crime. Playing on the film noir tradition, Following is relayed in a series of nonlinear flashbacks that slowly piece together into a darkly thrilling narrative.
