COMMENTS

Rosselini and De Sica were expected, but did not show at the screening in 1959. Shown as Il Generale Della Rovere. Screened again in 1976 as part of a retrospective of Festival films on the event's 20th anniversary, as chosen by Paine Knickerbocker.
General Della Rovere

Based on an actual incident in the Nazi occupation of Northern Italy, this film reveals a German plot to use a tricky Italian swindler in the guise of a beloved resistance officer, General della Rovere. He is introduced into Milan jail to ferret out partisan leaders. However, the false general, once there, becomes truly absorbed in his role. Suddenly, he refuses to reveal the identity of an important partisan. Resolving not to betray cause and country, he dies at the head of his men just as the real General della Rovere would have done.
