Skyy Prize Contender. Lisanne Skyler and Laura Gabbert in person. This provocative, boldly structured drama is inspired by the Joyce Carol Oates anthology Heat, using key stories to examine how the telling of events—whether real or imagined or somewhere in between— can help people find the strength to live in an imperfect world. A series of tales unfolds and intertwines in a shabby upstate New York bus station where every traveler has a backstory and a dream. Judith, 16 and already with too many secrets, and her brother Wesley are listlessly waiting for their buses. While Wesley seeks escape in books, Judith befriends the teenage Jimmy, becoming a willing listener to his wild imaginings about other travelers. Inventing whole worlds and past lives for the passers-by, Jimmy’s stories transfix Judith, making the unknown suddenly knowable, even if merely in fantasy. Taking turns imagining worlds, the two edge each other perilously close to revealing the hidden truths about their own lives, truths which will transform each of them. Directed by SF State alumna Lisanne Skyler, Getting to Know You further solidifies its exploration of the struggles and stories of the emotionally marginalized with its vivid color photography and a production design which captures all too well the mediocrity of its settings.
