Skyy Prize contender. Celina Murga in person.Childhood innocence, lost and regained, is at the heart of this debut feature film by Celina Murga. Ana Torres is a forlorn, aimless young woman who returns to her native town of Paraná, in the Argentine province of Entre Ríos, after several years of living in Buenos Aires. Melancholy as she questions her own identity, she is also hopeful about rediscovering something or someone that will give her life meaning. On her return to her childhood home, Ana enters an ambivalent emotional limbo as she sleepwalks through the motions of meeting former friends and acquaintances who are consumed with the quotidian concerns that make up a life—boyfriends, husbands, children (none of which Ana has)—and visits her old memories and familiar places. Ana is permeated with ambiguous, conflicting feelings of belonging and foreignness, but when she spots a newspaper photo taken by an ex-boyfriend, Mariano, now a local photographer, a spark begins to rekindle. Murga’s film, done in an almost documentary-like style, takes an unexpected turn when Ana meets eight-year-old Matías. By the mere fact of his uncomplicated purity, candid openness and adventurous spirit, he guides Ana on her journey to self-discovery and, literally, to a new avenue, which may lead to love.
