Hideko Takamine in person. The silent world of the deaf-mute is delicately probed by director Zenzo Matsuyama in Japan's entry, Happiness of Us Alone. The protagonists, in a wordless struggle against poverty and tragic events brought about by their deafness, are portrayed with delicacy and compassion by Hideko Takamine, Japan's leading actress today, and Keiju Kobayashi. This is Matsuyama's first directorial effort, but his creative artistry is already evident in the molding of the son's attitude of embarrassment towards his mute parents and particularly in the handling of a most unusual and moving love scene.
