Hear My Cry investigates the public suicide of a man who, in the watershed year of 1968, killed himself in the name of freedom, as a final gesture against Communist doublespeak. His self-immolation in a crowded Warsaw stadium brought his message to the world. Or did it? Those interviewed today tell how “we just went about our business” and they are meant to speak for a blasé nation. If history could talk, it probably would not cry.

Daniel Talbot, editor of Film: An Anthology , was the first recipient of the Mel Novikoff Award in 1988. Later he cofounded New Yorker Films, a distribution company that introduced many foreign language films to North American audiences. The Mel Novikoff Award, named after the pioneering San Francisco exhibitor, is given to an individual or institution whose work has enhanced the filmgoing public’s knowledge and appreciation of world cinema.
