Bert Haanstra in person. The actors in this film are not actors. They are people of Holland, at work and at play, totally unaware of the probing eye of inquisitive camera. Yet this is not a documentary in the ordinary sense of the word. For it reveals both the strong and the weak points of the very human Dutch—the features that are so unmistakably their own. This is a film about the Dutch people who live in a country "with more cloud and water than ground to stand on." The film is best described as a kaleidoscope of everyday people in everyday situations; at other times it becomes a panegyric; at other times it is openly ironic and frequently it is outright hilarious. In other words, it is about people, common people, uncommon people. You will love them as the filmmakers love them, that is to say, if you love yourself.
