From celebrations of animal spirituality to condemnations of laboratory animal testing, Animal Connections is a bittersweet inquiry into humankind’s multifaceted relationship with animals. By observing people’s interactions with other creatures, Philip Herbison captures the best and worst of human nature and explores the idea that we are in partnership with animals. Judging from some of the images, it’s time for the animals to renegotiate their contract. The compassion of animal lovers, however, offers hope of redemption for those who would change the rules from survival of the fittest to survival of the most profitable.

Daniel Talbot, editor of Film: An Anthology , was the first recipient of the Mel Novikoff Award in 1988. Later he cofounded New Yorker Films, a distribution company that introduced many foreign language films to North American audiences. The Mel Novikoff Award, named after the pioneering San Francisco exhibitor, is given to an individual or institution whose work has enhanced the filmgoing public’s knowledge and appreciation of world cinema.
