In the Mexican state of Oaxaca, certain villages celebrate their saint's days by electing a “Majordomo” to preside over three days of annual festivities. Animas Trujano tells the story of an arrogant Zapotec Indian who wishes to exalt himself in the eyes of his wife, family, beautiful mistress and domineering friends by winning this coveted position. Japan's leading actor, Toshiro Mifune, in his first Mexican film, plays the tragicomic part of the Indian. World famous cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa is presented with the ruins of the sacred city of Monte Alban for his artistic eye.

Though he starred in an Opening Night film (1967’s How I Won the War), lent his image and songs to 1968’s Festival entry Yellow Submarine and was scheduled to appear at the 1971 Festival with wife Yoko for an evening of their short films, John Lennon never attended the SFIFF.
