Alain Tanner, Switzerland’s best-known filmmaker, brings us the most original socio-political comedy of his career. Multiplying and highlighting the sort of odd, vague characters that marked his highly successful La Salamandre, Tanner presents eight individuals, all affected by the political events of 1968 but still registering their objections to society from within the bourgeoisie. There is very little plot, but as the characters explain themselves to us and to each other in such endearing and comic terms, we are drawn to them as they are drawn to each other. And the result is a charmingly eccentric mosaic of people and ideas that is one of the best films yet from the Swiss New Wave.
