Jeremy Kagan is the first director to deal with the entire experience of the contemporary American revolutionary. Katherine began the sixties as a wealthy college coed, and she begins the seventies as an underground bomber. We follow her radicalization through the turmoil and movements of the last decade, and the effect of her odyssey upon her close relationships. Partially filmed in San Francisco, Katherine stars Sissy Spacek (of Badlands), with an excellent supporting cast. The first director of television features to be honored in the Festival program, Mr. Kagan demonstrates a broad and imaginative talent that we are going to be seeing much more of in the future.

Some of the filmmakers whose works screened in our New Directors series include Cinda Firestone, Susan Sontag, Shu Shuen, Conrad Rooks, Shirley Clarke, Sandro Franchina, and Mitsuo Yanagimachi. This series, which began in 1965, was a predecessor to the New Directors series at Lincoln Center, which started in 1971.
