COMMENTS

Anselmo Duarte in person; aka The Given Word.

Based on the play by Dias Gomes, Keeper of Promises focuses on the trials of Ze (Leonardo Vilar), a poor farmer. When Ze's prized possession, a donkey, falls ill he vows that he will carry a heavy cross to the Church of Santa Barbara if the donkey is cured. As if by a miracle the donkey recovers and so Ze sets out on his journey to Salvador. When he arrives at the church he is refused entry by the priest. From here on out the film is politically charged, with the church, who believe Ze is a revolutionary and a troublemaker, fighting the people who believe Ze should get admittance to the church. This film criticizes the clerical aspect of the church rather than the spiritual validity of either side of the feud.
