Laws of Attraction

Romantic comedies set in New York and Ireland bring to mind many gorgeous settings, but leave it to Laws of Attraction to wittily find love inside a divorce court. The sparkling onscreen chemistry between Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore fuels this delightful homage to the romantic comedies of Hollywood’s Golden Age, specifically the Adam’s Rib-type pairings of Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Brosnan and Moore are two rival New York divorce attorneys, with Brosnan playing the devilish charmer to Moore’s more by-the-book type. Earning their keep by ending relationships, neither of them appear interested in love, much less one another, but a little business trip to Ireland brings unexpected results when both awake to find themselves husband and wife. Keeping their relationship together at home while tearing others’ apart at work, our sudden lovers may have started by finding romance in divorce, but soon they may start seeing divorce in their romance. Greatly aided by a supporting cast including Parker Posey and Michael Sheen in continuous-comedy mode, and by its vibrant New York and Ireland locales, Laws of Attraction is modern enough to pack a few surprises in its quick-moving script, but wise enough to pay tribute to the genre’s past greats through its cast’s charm and wit.
