COMMENTS

Director François Villiers in attendance.

Along with the construction of a dam in the French Alps, a parallel story of a girl’s growth and defeat of a rapacious family is revealed in this candid drama of provincial life. Hortense, still a minor, disturbs her relatives. They want her dead father’s gold, but she discovers it. Hortense purchases a television set and hides the treasure there. When the dam collapses, Hortense is nearly drowned. However, she survives and confronts her relatives with the hidden money saved from the flood. Now 21, Hortense ironically leaves them to purchase a sheep ranch.
