Shown with Men of the Port.In the small town of Murci in the Tuscany hills, girls still marry the boys their parents chose for them at birth. Ancient customs predictably guide daily life and few see reason to change. Selena, just 21 as the film starts, is expecting Rossano, a marine and her fiancé of 21 years, to return home. Selena, however, decides to resist her marital fate and enlists her best friend as an accomplice to this end. Meanwhile, the news that Dutchman Johan is coming to Murci to grow tulips in its hills startles the townspeople. The pastoral excellence of the region and the relaxed feel of the actors sets the film’s gentle rhythm. Italian filmmaker and Brown graduate Odetta Ciancarelli shot this first film on a very small budget with the help of family and friends.
