Carla, after five years of marriage, is going through a difficult period in her wedded life. It is a period in which she feels a strange lack of interest in her husband, Massimo, and this has something to do with a failure of communication between them, as well as a morbid atmosphere in the marriage itself. For Massimo considers his wife a sort of "special" lover, and over the years he has gently forced her into a kind of sexual relationship that, on more than one occasion, he has complicated by insisting on the participation of other friends, both male and female. Carla is slow to rebel and even then her rebellion is largely psychic. She is still in love with her husband, but she spends a day at the seashore alone, until she meets a young student named Aldo, who had no idea when he met this gorgeous girl, of exactly what was going to happen.

Steve Cochran, the American actor who starred in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1957 SFIFF entry Il Grido, demanded a private screening of the film before it could be shown to Festival audiences so he could ensure that scenes that had been censored in Italy had not been cut from the print. Cochran, who had American distribution rights to the film, got a screening’delaying the film’s 8:30 start time for ticketholders.
