COMMENTS

Ilia Livikou in person. Also known as Crazy Blood.

Filmed on the ancient island of Crete, A Peasant Young Gentleman tells the age-old story of a young man discovering the secret joys and passions of love. For a boy who knows very little of love-making at the beginning of the film, he learns quickly—involving himself in some strange and wonderful situations. The story unfolds amid the splendor of the ruins and artistic treasures of Knossos, the site of the Palace of King Minos, and the beautiful Cretan landscape. This is the first time that the ruins of the ancient Aegean civilization have been filmed with such vividness and color. A Peasant Young Gentleman is a lusty, fantasy-like film of today’s Greece, but also, a film that leans heavily on the classics of ancient times. Manos Katrakis, 1961 Golden Gate Award winner for Best Actor as Creon in Antigone, gives an outstanding and lively performance as Pan and the Poet. His co-star, Ilia Livikou, is the world famous Greek tragedian. A Peasant Young Gentleman is a tongue-in-cheek story humorously told with a twist ending. The earthly peasant comments come alive in the language of this colorful film.
