Frank Cassenti in person.Young director Frank Cassenti worked as an assistant to Costa-Gavras before making this prize-winning film which received standing ovations at the Cannes Film Festival. An evocative blend of art and politics, this perfectly crafted film interweaves on three distinct but related levels—a Resistance movement during the Occupation, a contemporary theater group’s efforts to recreate that movement and the eventual performance of the troupe. In 1944, after extensive but unsuccessful torture, the 23 members of the Manouchian Band were executed by the Nazis for their many guerrilla exploits. The majority of the band were refugees from other occupied countries, and they were denounced on a famed red poster as paid foreign insurrectionists. Strikingly photographed and beautifully scored, The Red Poster is a thoughtful revival of the memory of these freedom fighters, drawing a rapport with their brothers throughout the world today.
