An extremely rare screening of the full version of Oliveira's seven-hour adaption pf French symbolist poet-playwright Paul Claudel's marathon theatre masterpiece. The action spans four continents and involves half the history of 16th-century Europe and the new World, with metaphysical conceptions that play directly into the filmmaker's perennial themes of unattainable perfection and grail-like striving. Fred Camper writes, "Spectacularly beautiful, as grand in its thematic and cinematic ambitions as it is successful in realizing them."
