Martin Rejtman in person.North American Gen-X alienation has nothing over its Argentinian counterpart, if this deadpan comedy is any indication. Silvia Prieto is 27 years old and works in a Buenos Aires coffee bar. Her life, like that of her ex-husband, half-hearted lovers and other twentysomething friends, is played out as a string of unrelated quotidian details, false starts and dead ends. But Silvia wants to change all that. Perhaps a weekend at a seaside resort will provide a new direction? A chance encounter with a mysterious Italian sets off a series of mini-events but, instead of liberating her, they only deepen her confusion. Back home, Silvia finds out that even her name isn't original: There are two of her in the local phone book. Fortified by a new job and a new relationship (albeit one with her best friend’s ex-husband, a writer who’s not exactly on the bestseller list), she sets out to satisfy her curiosity about the other Silvia Prieto’s identity—and to sort out her own. Behind the easy laughter at this charming story there’s an empathetic, generous warmth to the young woman’s search for meaning, her unspoken yearning for happiness.
