Two genocides: the first perpetrated by Hutu extremists against the Tutsi and moderate Hutu in Rwanda in 1995; the second, in ex-Zaire, is the killing by the Tutsi of the Hutu who escaped Rwanda. The tragedy of the massacres and the endless journey out of and back into Rwanda is expressed in the grief of families who mourn their dead relatives, lost to brutality, dysentery and starvation.

When Festival Executive Director Claude Jarman addressed journalists at the 1977 Festival press conference, he announced that the SFIFF was launching an ’important experiment’ by screening films at the Castro Theatre (at the urging of Mayor George Moscone to take the Festival to the neighborhoods) The experiment must have worked, as the Festival still has screenings at the Castro to this day, in addition to many other satellite venues.
