For decades the Australian government seized Aborigine children from their parents and shipped them to missionary-run dormitories or white foster homes. The misguided aim was to force the assimilation of a race of people who were viewed as biologically and culturally inferior. In reality, thousands of children were traumatized without just cause. To this day, the government has failed to offer a public apology. “The denial of the history of aboriginal people in the last 200 years is a national psychosis,” one historian declares. Later to find fame with the amnesia-tinged film noir update Memento, British director Christopher Nolan was nominated for the SKYY Prize in 1998 for his first feature Following. Nolan shot the film about a writer who stalks strangers, on weekends over the course of a year on a budget of $6,000.
