Opening Night film. Joanne Woodward appeared in person.Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams unites three of America’s most sensitive film artists in a triumph of emotional perceptivity. Joanne Woodward, in her first film appearance since her magnificent portrayal in The Effect of Gamma Rays, joins director Gilbert Cates (I Never Sang For My Father) and screenwriter Stewart Stern (Rachel, Rachel) in this drama of a woman confronting an acute emotional crisis in what had been a stable middle class existence. Academy Award winner Martin Balsam plays his most important role to date as Miss Woodward’s husband, and in the role of her mother, Sylvia Sidney makes a remarkable return to the screen after a self-imposed absence of 17 years. The Festival is proud to open its 17th annual program with this touching drama, one of the major American films of the year.
