Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, The Marquise of O... is Eric Rohmer’s first film since he completed his series of six moral tales with Chloe in the Afternoon. Here he turns from modern settings to a period piece, filmed in German and set in the late 18th century. A widowed Marquise, saved by a Russian officer when her chateau is invaded, later becomes pregnant, and no one believes her when she claims that she has maintained her virtue. Ostracized and reduced to despair, she finds strength in her innocence and solves the mystery of her predicament. But the solution poses a new moral decision for her. The fine cast is headed by Edith Clever and Bruno Ganz (who plays the lover of Jeanne Moreau in Lumiere). The photography by Nestor Almendros is perfect for this rich and forceful romance.
