Viola Dees adores her grandson Walter, but at 89 is she the best person to raise him? “Age has nothing to do with love,” declares Viola, aka Big Mama. True, but Walter is even more mercurial than the average nine-year-old. His long-vanished mother was a drug addict who bequeathed him a legacy of developmental disabilities; his father died when he was four. Over the course of a year, Big Mama crusades to do what’s best for her immensely likable boy. Bobby McFerrin’s heartrending original music adds to the film’s emotional punch.

Though the film had won two major awards at the Berlin Film Festival, John Cassavetes’ Love Streams was pulled from the SFIFF program at the last minute by the distributor. According to Cassavetes, MGM/UA was concerned that showing Streams, which the director himself proclaimed ’a crazy film,’ at the SFIFF might hurt the film’s box office upon wider release
