Henry Jaglom and Dennis Hopper in person.A psychopathic sergeant, returned from Vietnam to accompany a comrade’s body home for burial, is crossing America by train. Haunted by hallucinatory configurations of reality and terror, the soldier becomes involved with various passengers in this chilling Cannes Festival hit which buries the American Dream while longing for the days when we were the “good guys.” Taryn Power (daughter of Tyrone) makes an impressive debut as a girl who tries to help the sergeant, and Dean Stockwell registers strongly as an underground radical. But Dennis Hopper gives the performance of his career as the tormented lost innocent, putting together an incredible portrait of confusion, violence, and vulnerability. Henry Jaglom directs with an intelligence and sensitivity that make Tracks the first great dramatic film to come out of the Vietnam experience.
