Renato Ciasca in person. In Brazilian filmmaker Beto Brant’s stylish third feature, the violence of São Paulo street life is intertwined—and often indistinguishable—from the greed and corruption of business and government. Ivan and Gilberto have encountered a business problem: Their partner refuses to involve the trio’s construction company in a building contract with a shady government employee. Enter Anisio, a slimy hit man hired by Ivan and Gilberto to eliminate the barrier between them and the lucrative job—but the business of murder comes with a higher price than they expect. Armed with evidence from the killing and a desire to involve himself in the “legitimate” construction company, Anisio blackmails his way into the patrician lives of the two engineers, his presence upsetting some of the rigid social barriers typical of modern Brazil as new, seedy faces invade the professional climes of the office world. Anisio even charms the dead man’s daughter, installs himself in her posh home and takes her on a tour through the São Paulo ghettos. Ultimately the partners find blood on their own hands as paranoia and menace breed betrayal. When the characters of The Trespasser violate each other’s turf, they find that power is mutable, greed is unquenchable and no one is as safe as their surroundings suggest.
