Shown with Hear My Cry. Pavel Lozinski in person. If history could talk, we might begin to understand something. Birthplace, in which Henryk Grynberg, a Polish Jew, returns to the village of his childhood to discover the fate of his family, comes close to talking history: the Polish peasants in this extraordinary film seem unchanged with the years, and memory, grown sharp with old age, has made time stand still. We are back in the 1940s. Interviews with the villagers, some reluctant, some relieved, trace the bitter fate of a father and brother, a tale that unwittingly holds all the suspense and terror of a fictional plot, complete with a MacGuffin.
