This is a story of passion, jealousy and madness. It concerns a young widower, Jose Maria, who has three children, and is persuaded by his good friend Manuel to marry again. The girl he finally settles on has loved him for many years and confesses her jealousy of his first wife. But with patience and persistence, she wins over her husband's three children and his aging mother-in-law, and, in time, becomes pregnant herself. But when her step-daughter dies in the river and Laura, in attempting to save her life loses her unborn child, the tenuous thread that held her to reality slips and is finally broken. Her insecure situation in the family has not been alleviated by Jose Maria's resumption of a love affair with a free-wheeling local girl named Ana. What happens then amounts to a chain reaction of tragedy...
