COMMENTS

Coline Serreau in person.

This unusual comedy about a bisexual ménage-à-trois-plus-one is the first feature-length drama by Coline Serreau, who has previously been an actress, scriptwriter and documentary filmmaker. The main character is played by Sami Frey, who takes care of both his male lover (a disturbed, childlike musician) and his female roommate (who has left her husband and earns the money for this household). Then he meets a rather dizzy upper-class girl and falls for her, throwing the general arrangement into crisis. The film becomes a modern version of the classic screwball comedy, with some gently stated social commentary underlying the protagonists’ contacts with “normal” society. Ms. Serreau is a new talent to watch and the film remarkably and appropriately never implies that any of the main characters are strange, rather the world in which they are trying to live.
