This lushly photographed love story was the first Soviet entry ever at the Berlin Film Festival. Set against the social struggles of rural Russia in the early 1920s, the story focuses on a love triangle between a beautiful girl, a wealthy farmer and a member of a farm collective. The heroine is played by Marina Mejelova, and both emotional uncertainty and political leanings keep her relationships in constant flux. Director Rodion Nakhapetov, who is also an actor, is attending the Festival for the American premiere of his film.

Spike Lee has attended the San Francisco International several times. He came, film reels in hand, for the world premiere of She’s Gotta Have It in 1986. He returned in 1994 with Crooklyn, which starred Oakland’s own Delroy Lindo. And in 2007 he received the Festival’s Film Society Directing Award.
