In Xala (1974), Sembéne's funniest film, a smug middle-aged businessman who already has two wives proposes to marry a third. On the wedding night he can't perform and finds out that a xala (a hex) has been put on him. His increasingly desperate attempts to remove it gradually strip away all of the protective security of his class and status.
