Shown with Tokyo Magic Hour in the program Split Screen: Two Films by Amir Muhammad. Amir Muhammad in person. The Year of Living Vicariously extends the documentary style developed in Muhammad’s Sundance entry The Big Durian. Shooting in and around the production of Gie, an Indonesian epic about a 1960s activist, Muhammad interviews a spectrum of people—from lowly workers and extras to stars and producer—to capture a moment in a democracy and a time of thinking about contemporary politics (post-Suharto elections were looming at the time), dictatorships of the past, local folktales and the problems of the film industry.
