The Year of Living Vicariously extends the documentary style developed in Muhammad’s Sundance entry The Big Durian. Shooting in and around the production of Gie, an Indonesian epic about a 1960s activist, Muhammad interviews a spectrum of people—from lowly workers and extras to stars and producer—to capture a moment in a democracy and a time of thinking about contemporary politics (post-Suharto elections were looming at the time), dictatorships of the past, local folktales and the problems of the film industry.
