Remember not so long ago when global warming was a virtual non-issue, a scientific theory largely unknown to the masses? Ah, the blissful ol’ days of ignorance and denial. In the era of Al Gore the Oscar star, climate change has gone mainstream. Now everyone has something to say about the issue, as activists, scientists, journalists, politicians and pundits jostle for position on opposing sides of the hot-and overheating-issue. Those calling for change spar with the naysayers (generally high-paid lobbyists funded by the fossil fuel industry), fighting for the hearts, minds and kilowatts of the American people. This tantalizing “toxic comedy” tracks many of these global warming messengers as they parry across the widening chasm between scientific understanding and political action. Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Ross Gelbspan comes out of retirement to write another book; American TV’s first on-air climatologist, Heidi Cullen, goes from 30-second sound bites to a 30-minute show covering the global warming beat; and Rick Piltz, former federal climate assessment officer, turns White House whistleblower to expose the Bush Administration’s manipulation and censorship of global warming science. Meanwhile, Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus, dubbed the “Bad Boys of Environmentalism,” tour the country railing against the failures of the environmental movement to properly awaken the public to the issue. With the wry, intelligent humor of their previous award-winning toxic doc Blue Vinyl, directors Daniel B. Gold and Judith Helfand do a brilliant job of cracking open the polarizing subject of polar caps, making it painfully clear that An Inconvenient Truth was just the tip of this (melting) iceberg.

In 1996, Harvey Keitel was the first recipient of the Peter J. Owens Award, honoring “brilliance, independence and honesty” in acting. Honest he was. During the clip show at his tribute Keitel, unhappy with one of the clips, began waving his arms and shouting until the screen went black. The screen lit up with a new clip and the tribute continued.
