On a sunny day in April, 1967, Canyon Cinema began distributing experimental films in the Bay Area, and this year celebrates its 35th anniversary. Canyon Cinema is the premier distributor of experimental films, supplying the world with the most creative films in the avant garde field—3,500 films and tapes from 350 world-renowned filmmakers. This program represents just few of the hundreds of recently acquired titles.

Daniel Talbot, editor of Film: An Anthology , was the first recipient of the Mel Novikoff Award in 1988. Later he cofounded New Yorker Films, a distribution company that introduced many foreign language films to North American audiences. The Mel Novikoff Award, named after the pioneering San Francisco exhibitor, is given to an individual or institution whose work has enhanced the filmgoing public’s knowledge and appreciation of world cinema.
