In his latest film, director Otar Iosseliani (Favorites of the Moon, SFIFF 1984; A Little Monastery in Tuscany, SFIFF 1989; And There Was Light, SFIFF 1991) once again shows us a humorous reflection of the changing times with his special brand of irony. This parable, set in contemporary France, revolves around the aristocratic lives of two elderly gentle-women who live in an opulent though dilapidated chateau. The ladies spend their days entertaining eccentric characters, trying to decipher news of the strange and disquieting modern times reported on their trusty Walkman and admiring life as it passes. Outside of their charmingly dusty world of old letters, art and contentment, the jaws of commerce, thieves and covetous heirs await their deaths. The inevitable finally happens, leaving the estate unguarded against the greed of an unsympathetic era. An EFDO film presented in association with Cahiers du Cinema.
