Shown with Swing Under the Swastika.Rosa von Praunheim has fashioned a touching portrait of three stars of 1920s Germany. Appalled by the Nazis, these women courageously left their homeland to make new careers for themselves abroad. Though all began as dancers, their talents flowered differently: Lotte Goslar in comic mime, Dolly Haas in film and theater, Maria Piscator in choreography and dramatic education. Bon Praunheim (A Virus Respects No Moral, SFIFF 1987) allows his subjects to reveal themselves and their histories through their own words and works—a fitting tribute to lives of integrity and talent.
