Manoel de Oliveira received the Akira Kurosawa Award in 1994; he appeared in person.

The final film in Oliveira's tetralogy of frustrated love is based on a true story about novelist Camilo Castelo Branco (author of Doomed Love) and his love for a young Englishwoman, Fanny Owen, who marries his best friend and is ultimately rejected by him. As rigorously stylized as Doomed Love, Francisca was hailed as the event of the 1981 Cannes Film Festival.
