Shown in the program Jonas Mekas—"Cinema Maniac." Jonas Mekas appeared in person to receive the 1992 Mel Novikoff Award.A self described “Raving Maniac of the Cinema,” filmmaker, critic, preservationist, distributor, exhibitor and all-round nurturer of independent cinema since the mid-’50s, Jonas Mekas is synonymous with the American avant-garde movement. Through his writings in the The Village Voice and Film Culture, Mekas disseminated his infectious excitement for the burgeoning new cinema of which he was a part. Founder of the Film-Makers' Cooperative and later Anthology Film Archives, he provided an essential outlet for artists from Kenneth Anger to Andy Warhol. This is one of Mekas’s selections of seminal films by artists working in New York, San Francisco and Colorado.
