Manoel de Oliveira received the Akira Kurosawa Award in 1994; he appeared in person.
OTHER
Oliveira's first film, now considered a classic by film historians, is a lyrical documentary portrait of the daily activities along the river Douro in his native city of Oporto.

The first silent film screened at the Festival (now an annual tradition) was The Scarlet Letter (1924) by the great Swedish director Victor Sjöström, on October 24, 1968. The film’s star, Lillian Gish, was honored with an in-person tribute two days later.
