For those who thought La Salamandre was a unique event rather than a sign of a new cinematic force, a sort of Swiss “New Wave,” that proof is now here with The Invitation. A comedic look at human foibles and Swiss society, the film is strong on insight and perception without becoming ponderous or judgmental. A timid bachelor invites his office coworkers to a party at his home following an extended leave of absence. They come and, as food and drink begin to take their effect, personalities change and new ways of relating become unavoidable. Jean-Luc Bideau (of La Salamandre) heads an excellent cast in this witty and unpretentious film. Director Claude Goretta keeps his eye on the characters and developments without becoming episodic or resorting to stereotypes. The result is an entertaining and accurate view of a milieu rarely seen by American audiences.
