Shown October 10 and 11, 1977.Winner of the International Critics Prize at Cannes, this is the best film yet by the award-winning Hungarian director, Marta Meszaros, whose last film The Adoption was one of the hits of the 1975 San Francisco Film Festival. Lili Monori gives a flawless performance as a single mother doing advanced studies in agriculture at a university. Against her better judgment, she becomes involved with an associate who wants to marry her, but who resents her child and her desire for a career. The tension between her independence and his chauvinism is explored with the spare, controlled attention to nuance and detail which characterizes the work of this leading East European director.
