Part of a salute to Paramount.Unseen for many years, this key early musical has been lovingly restored by the UCLA Film Archives allowing us to present it in its original tinted version. In 1932, the delicious Maurice Chevalier/Jeannette MacDonald partnership was renewed and with George Cukor directing the witty script Samson Raphaelson wrought from a play by Lothar Schmidt (which Lubitsch had filmed in 1924 as The Marriage Circle), everything looked rosy. But after several weeks’ work, Cukor found that producer Lubitsch was taking over... He left the studio; Lubitsch re-shot much of the footage and got full director credit on this movie which was a joyous success from the start.
