Screened as a part of the New Directors series. Monte Hellman and Jack Nicholson appeared in person. This year, Monte Hellman was discovered at the European film festivals (Cannes, Berlin, Pesaro) and at Montreal. At each he was highly praised for his unusual approach to the traditional American Western. In two works, The Shooting and Ride the Whirlwind, he has succeeded in capturing the beauty, hardship and sad ironies of life in the unsettled West, without neglecting the terse, uncommunicative violence of its people and the presence of needless death.
