Tell Them Not to Kill Me

The small but lively Venezuelan film industry continues to surprise. Following the international success of such directors as Diego Risquez (Orinoko) and the Bonets (Tiznao), attention this past year has been focused on Freddy Siso and his remarkable Tell Them Not to Kill Me. Based on a story by the famous Mexican writer Juan Rulfo (in his collection The Land in Flames), it tells the story of Juvencio, who killed the godfather of his child 35 years before the start of the film. Now his guilt, in the person of the godfather’s son, is catching up with him. The film abounds in evocative images of hopelessness, dreams and mysticism, all set against a dry, parched landscape where the people themselves have been dried up by ages of injustice. This powerful film has emerged from the University of Merida’s extraordinary film movement, which has emphasized strong visual qualities in its moviemaking.
