Body of Correspondence

Body of Correspondence tells the complex story of a postmortem menage a trois involving an obsessed archivist and two dead women whose letters he curates. In uncovering the letters, he unwittingly allows the women a second chance to reread them and relive their intimate relationship. Through the recounting of rich and often ribald tales, the two vividly reembodied ghosts lead the archivist to abandon his objective stance for a more subjective, if somewhat unsettling participation in their history. Conceived as a creative autobiography, the video reflects the directors’ ten-year history as collaborators and friends. With confidence and economy they punch holes, open doors and create seams in the seemly surfaces of historical representation. What begins as the archivist’s struggle to balance memory and imagination becomes a compelling and passionate love story.
