For years Dr. Caligari was known only in black-and-white, but the restored film has been given back both its original color tints and tones and its original hand-printed titles with their distinctive Fraktur lettering and background graphics designed to match the decor. The result is a revitalized Caligari which regains its authority as the catalyst that triggered German Expressionism in film. The famous trompe l’oeil effects—the tricky interplay between painted, artificial and natural light and the endless regressions of teasing illusions—are now made visible in a matchless, sparkling print.
